Cambly is an innovative platform where students can improve their English by talking to native speakers. It’s definitely not a scam.
It’s an interesting business I wish existed when I first started learning English back in 2005.
Indeed, the best way to improve English is by practising, and the more people discover about this possibility, the higher the demand for this type of service. Why? Because it’s very effective and inexpensive!
If you are a native English speaker, you can take advantage of this increased demand and get paid to help students.
Not only you can make your own hours and work from the comfort of your home, but you also get to know people from all over the world and learn about different cultures.
What if You Are a Non-Native Speaker?
Unfortunately, Cambly only hires native Speakers and that is probably because most students would rather talk to them.
Another reason may be that they prefer to simplify their hiring process only by selecting nationalities rather than making people go through a strict selection process to prove they speak fluently.
There are many English teachers and fluent speakers who may feel like this system is unfair, and I get that. My wife is Brazilian and has worked for 8 years as an English teacher. Still, she wouldn’t be allowed to join Cambly. But that’s life!
Fortunately, there is an alternative for non-native speakers called Palfish.

- They only pay for the exact amount of time you talk. That means if you are available for 1 hour, buy your only speak for 30 minutes, you will only get paid $5.10.
How to Become a Cambly Tutor?
The hiring process is actually very simple. You can join Cambly as a tutor by visiting https://www.cambly.com/en/tutors.
Then, click on the “Get Started” button and sign up using your Google or Facebook account.
The next step is to check the speed of your internet connection and submit a short video about yourself. Just talk spontaneously as if you were talking to a friend.

Then, you just need to wait for approval, which usually takes 24 hours or a few days.
How Does it Work?
To start receiving calls, all you have to do is log in to your tutor account and become available. However, there is a chance no one will call you during the period you are logged in.
For this reason, Cambly has a system called Priority Hours (PH), which allows you to commit to specific hours and get priority over tutors who are not scheduled. PH will undoubtedly help to get more calls and avoid long gaps.
Another advantage of setting up Priority Hours is that you are guaranteed to earn a minimum of 15 or 30 minutes worth of calls, depending on specific hours. So, you will make at least $2.55 or $5.10 regardless of the amount of time you speak.
Keep in mind that if you don’t show up, you may get a penalty and be 3 days without being able to set up priority hours.
You have the right to cancel PH at least 12 hours in advance without any problems though.
What Should You Talk About?
Well, the conversation is open about any topic, really. Although you don’t need to follow any lesson, Cambly has some at your disposal if you want.
From my research, I discovered Cambly is more popular among teenagers and adults. The conversations are usually more relaxed compared to those of other tutoring websites that require a teaching plan.
Sometimes students ask for help with their essays, article reading, etc.
Many Cambly users report enjoying the conversations and prefer Cambly than other sites that are focused on teaching Chinese kids such as Qkids, VIPKID and DadaABC.
Free Trial Students
You will occasionally pick up calls that last for 5-15 minutes from free trial students.
Some of these folks are not serious about learning, and it can be quite annoying to spend your time with them. What’s important is that you will get paid while they will be just wasting their time.
However, most students are serious, and if you build a good relationship with them, they will become your regular customers.
How Much Money Can You Earn?
