What is Scribie?

As you already know, Scribie is a freelance platform where you can convert audio and video files to text, a process called transcription.

The job involves typing out everything you hear in the audio files. It’s a simple job, but which requires a good command of the English language and a great interpretation ability.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Work from home and make your own hours.
You can reapply for the test up to 10 times.
Automated transcripts are provided with each file, which can help you save time.
There is a $5 bonus for every 3 hours of transcription.
You can be promoted and earn more.
No experience required.

Cons

Very low pay.
The audio quality can very bad sometimes.
Reviewers can make mistakes and give you an unfair rating.
Files can be rejected and not paid.

Who is it For?

Contrary to what many people might think, there is no need to be a professional transcriptionist to apply for Scribie.

In fact, Scribie can be considered a starting point for those who want to gain experience in this industry.

How Does it Work?

Application

The first step is to click on the apply tab and log in using your PayPal address. You will need a PayPal account to join because there is no other payment processor available.

The next step is to submit the form, which includes your name, email address, average typing speed (words per minute), years of transcription experience and other relevant information you might have.

Test

Scribie will review your application within 1 business day, and if accepted, you will receive an invitation to create an account and take the test.

As you don’t need any experience to join, I believe you won’t have any problem to be accepted at this point.

For the test, you will have to select an audio file and transcribe it. If you pass, you will get the certification and paid for the transcription test

The great thing about Scribie is that if you don’t pass the first test, you can see the reviewed file, and reapply up to 10 times.

Working as a Transcriptionist

Once accepted, you will get access to all the files that need transcription. There is no limit to how many files you can select (one at a time), and they are available on a first come, first served basis.

Each audio file is less than 10 minutes and comes with an automated transcript. This computer-generated transcript has many mistakes, such as missing words, and incorrect punctuation but it can still save you around 50% of the effort.

There is no time limit to transcribe a file. The only requirement is that you keep a high level of accuracy.

Grading and Promotions

There is a grading system in place ranging from 5 (Excellent) to 1 (Poor) based on your performance.

If your average grade falls below 2.5, you won’t be able to accept more files.

The problem is that Scribie seems very demanding and may reject files with a few errors.

Scribie also gives you the opportunity to be promoted as a reviewer, self-reviewer, proofreader and even a contracted proofreader (monthly salary). It all depends on your skills and performance.

How Much Money Can You Make – A Realistic Estimate

The website claims the pay ranges from $5 to $25 per audio hour, and there is a $5 bonus for every 3 hours.

Usually, they will pay you $0.50 for a 6-minute file.

Note the payment is not based on the number of hours you work, but on the duration of the file.

So, it doesn’t matter whether you take 30 minutes or 1 hour to transcribe a 6-minute audio file. The pay will be the same.

Some people complain about the abysmal pay rate and for a good reason!

It’s safe to assume the average transcriber will take more than half an hour to transcribe these 6-minute audio files. That means your wage will be approximately $1.2 per hour.

Let’s assume you will earn on average $1.2 per hour, and work 5 days a week. That means you will work 8 hours per day (full-time) to make $200.

Scribie gives you the estimate of your potential earnings in different roles:

Conclusion – Is Scribie Worth it?

Well, it depends on where you live and how fast you are. As I live in London, which has a minimum wage of approximately $10 per hour, it’s definitely not worth it for me.

It can be worth it if you live in a country with a low minimum wage such as India, The Philippines, China, or many other third world countries.

Still, there are better ways to make money online as I explain further down.

How I Prefer to Make Money Online

In 2015, I discovered that building an internet business could realistically earn me enough money to quit my job and take me and my wife on a World Trip without touching our savings.

The strategy that I use revolves around setting up a simple WordPress site, growing an audience (helping people through your content) and earning affiliate commissions.

I knew that all my hard work would eventually pay off and give me the freedom, so I persisted! I pushed hard, and now the site generates $1,000+ per month.

Now, we are ready to start our 2-year trip in 2019! At the same time, the site will keep generating an income and supporting us during all the journey.

I started as a complete newbie, but thanks to this excellent step by step affiliate marketing training and supportive community, I learned the ropes.

I highly encourage anyone who wishes to make a full-time income from home to join for free, watch the first 10 lessons and take massive action.

The potential is huge, but it only works if you consistently apply the strategies and give your business enough time to grow.
